Goa police personnel were attacked in Madhya Pradesh’s Alirajpur district by unidentified suspects on bikes, who were reportedly attempting to aid a criminal’s escape. The police had gone to Madhya Pradesh to arrest Hira Singh Bamniya, who is wanted in several cases.
Bamniya, an active criminal since 2009, has been evading arrest for over five years. A Goa Police team traced him to Alirajpur and successfully arrested him after due legal procedures, according to a report by NDTV.
After completing the documentation and medical examination at the Bori Police Station, the police headed out to take the accused into transit remand. However, as soon as the vehicle moved out of the police station limits, at least 15-20 bike-borne attackers, all of their faces covered by masks, launched a sudden attack on the police.
The assailants began pelting stones at the police vehicle and attacked the personnel with sharp-edged weapons, including sickles, as per the report. They shattered the police vehicle’s windows and damaged the car in an apparent attempt to aid the accused’s escape.
Two police personnel were injured in the attack, including sub-inspector Sitaram Malik of Goa Police, who sustained a shoulder injury. Despite the sudden attack, the police managed to fend off the assailants and prevent the accused’s escape.
Local police were alerted immediately after the attack, and additional forces reached the spot to bring the situation under control. Seeing the local police reinforcements, the attackers fled the spot.
An FIR was registered on charges related to assault on police personnel, damage to government property, and use of deadly weapons. Police have begun efforts to identify and arrest the accused, who are reportedly Bamniya’s associates.
“The suspect was safely brought to the Bori police station. Goa police are now processing the legal formalities to take him into custody on a transit remand for further interrogation in Goa,” SP Raghuvansh Kumar Singh told the Times of India.
