Yet another blight on the beautiful game.

In deeply tragic news, 20-year-old Ghanaian footballer Dominic Frimpong was killed during an armed robbery attack on his club, Berekum Chelsea’s team bus, as they returned from a Ghana Premier League fixture.

The incident occurred on Sunday as the team travelled back from an away match in the Ghana Premier League against Samartex in Samreboi, roughly 270 km from Berekum, a game they had narrowly lost 1-0.

According to a statement from Berekum Chelsea, “masked men wielding guns and assault rifles” ambushed the team bus, blocking the road and forcing the vehicle to stop during the return journey.

Police reports indicate that as the driver attempted to reverse the bus to escape, the attackers opened fire. Frimpong was struck in the head and later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

He is the only fatality reported from the attack.

“The GFA has received with profound shock and deep sorrow the tragic news of the passing of Dominic Frimpong of Berekum Chelsea Football Club,” the Ghana Football Association said in an official statement.

“This tragic incident is not only a huge loss to Berekum Chelsea but also to Ghana football as a whole. Dominic was a promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league.”

Authorities have launched a manhunt for the suspects, with police confirming that investigations are ongoing.

In response, the Ghana Football Association has also pledged to strengthen security arrangements for clubs travelling for domestic competitions.
