The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2026 registration will commence on August 25, 2025, via the newly launched official website gate2026.iitg.ac.in.

The examination will be organised by IIT Guwahati, who will also oversee registrations and applications this year.

The online registration portal will remain open without late fee until September25. Inclusively, there is an extended window with a late fee until October6. Candidates are advised to register well in advance to avoid last-minute issues.

GATE 2026: IMPORTANT DATES AND DEADLINES

Here are the key dates to remember for GATE 2026 registration:

  • Online registration opens: August25, 2025

  • Last date for regular registration: September25, 2025

  • Final date with late fee: October6, 2025

  • GATE 2026 exam dates: February7, 8, 14, and 15, 2026

  • Results expected: March19, 2026

Candidates can apply for up to two test papers, with one application form covering both selections.

The examination is entirely objective and computerbased, and conducted in English. Question formats may include MCQs, multiple select (MSQ), and numericalanswer type (NAT) responses.

GATE 2026: ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

A candidate is eligible to apply for GATE 2026 if they:

  • Are in the third or higher year of an undergraduate programme or have already completed a degree in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts, or Humanities from a recognised institute.

  • Hold equivalent qualifications approved by MoE/AICTE/UGC/UPSC, including those from foreign institutions.

  • There is no upper age limit for GATE applicants.

GATE 2026: APPLICATION FEE STRUCTURE

The fee varies depending on candidate category and registration period:

Female / SC / ST / PwD candidates:

  • Regular period: Rs1,000 per paper

  • Late period: Rs1,500 per paper

Other candidates:

  • Regular period: Rs2,000 per paper

  • Late period: Rs2,500 per paper

GATE 2026: PURPOSE AND ADMISSION BENEFITS

GATE scores are widely accepted for admission to postgraduate programmes such as M.Tech, M.E., and Ph.D. in institutions like IITs, IISc, and other government-aided technical institutes.

The score is also used for PSU recruitment and to avail financial assistance under government schemes. For example:

  • M.Tech students may receive a monthly stipend of Rs12,400 for up to 22 months.

  • Direct-PhD candidates may receive Rs37,000 per month for two years, rising to Rs42,000 per month thereafter.
