A district police official reported on Thursday that 12 students from a residential school for tribals were allegedly beaten with sticks by a former student for not properly cleaning the hostel’s toilet.
The incident took place earlier this week at the Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram School hostel in Talasari.
A 21-year-old former student of the institution allegedly beat the 12 students with sticks for failing to clean the toilet properly, causing serious injuries to their hands and legs. The accused, who is currently studying at an ITI, has been arrested, according to an official from the Talasari police station.
Parents and social activists have expressed outrage, demanding strict action not only against the accused but also against the hostel superintendent, whom they accuse of negligence and failing to ensure student safety.

Earlier in July, the Maharashtra government informed that 8,213 villages across the state lack access to schools, highlighting a significant deficiency in the education infrastructure. According to government data, 5,373 schools in Maharashtra are without electricity, and 530 schools lack drinking water. 3,335 schools do not have separate toilets for girls, and 5,124 schools lack toilets for boys, raising serious concerns about hygiene, safety, and dropout rates, particularly among female students.
Additionally, student safety remains a major issue. The state has disclosed that out of Maharashtra’s 1,05,052 schools, only approximately 50,000 have CCTV cameras installed, despite explicit instructions from the Bombay High Court. This directive followed a disturbing incident in Badlapur where a student was sexually abused on school grounds earlier this year, revealing significant security lapses. On May 13, 2025, the Directorate of Primary Education mandated all schools to install CCTV cameras to enhance student safety and monitoring. Nevertheless, government data shows that over half of the state’s schools still operate without CCTV surveillance, leaving millions of students at risk.
