A fire broke out in the infant ward of a medical college in Jhansi on Friday, with reports suggesting that several children are trapped inside the ward.

The incident occurred in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) of Maharani Lakshmibai Medical College in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh.

As per initial reports, the fire was caused by a cylinder blast. Several children have been safely evacuated from the ward.

District Magistrate and senior officials are also present at the scene. A rescue operation is currently underway

Taking cognisance of the incident, UP CM Yogi Adityanath, in a post on X, said, “The death of children in an accident that occurred in the NICU of the medical college located in Jhansi district is extremely sad and heartbreaking.”

“The district administration and concerned officials have been instructed to carry out relief and rescue operations on a war footing,” he added.
