Praggnanandhaa held Wei Yi to a composed draw in Round 2 to stay joint leader at the 2026 Candidates.

Indian GM R Praggnanandhaa continued his steady start at the FIDE Candidates Tournament, playing out a composed draw with China’s Wei Yi in Round 2 to remain in joint lead with 1.5 points on Monday.

How Pragg’s Draw Played Out

Coming off an impressive opening-round win over Anish Giri, Praggnanandhaa once again showed control and maturity, this time from the black side of a French Defence. While the game never exploded into the kind of tactical fireworks seen in Round 1, the Indian managed to exert mild pressure early on.

Wei Yi, however, opted for pragmatism over risk. A series of exchanges simplified the position into an opposite-coloured bishops endgame, a notoriously drawish scenario.

Despite Praggnanandhaa holding an extra pawn, White’s defensive setup proved “impregnable,” and the players agreed to a draw after 46 moves.

Round 2 Sees Calm After Opening Fireworks

Fabiano Caruana was held to a draw by Giri, while Uzbek prodigy Javokhir Sindarov split the point with Germany’s Matthias Bluebaum.

The final game between Hikaru Nakamura and Andrey Esipenko also drifted toward a draw, with Nakamura defending a theoretically level rook-and-pawns endgame.

Missed Chances Define Women’s Section

In the women’s event running alongside, Divya Deshmukh came agonisingly close to taking sole lead but let a winning position slip against compatriot R Vaishali. A late blunder allowed Vaishali to escape with a remarkable queen-sacrifice resource.

China’s Jiner Zhu also squandered a near-winning position against Kateryna Lagno, who salvaged a draw with a timely rook sacrifice.

Elsewhere, Kazakhstan’s Bibisara Assaubayeva and Russia’s Aleksandra Goryachkina played out a draw, while Zhongyi Tan shared the point with Ukraine’s Anna Muzychuk.

Notably, the women’s section is yet to produce a decisive result after two rounds.

What’s At Stake

The FIDE Candidates remains chess’s ultimate proving ground. The winner of the open section will challenge reigning world champion D Gukesh later this year, while the women’s champion earns a shot at Ju Wenjun.
