‘F1 Race In India In 2027’: Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya Makes Huge Prediction

Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Monday said he is pushing for a Formula 1 race to be held in India in 2027. In an informal interaction with the media, Mandaviya stated that at least three companies have shown interest in operating the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida.

“There will be an F1 race in India in 2027. First race will be at Buddha International Circuit,” Mandaviya said.

The Indian Grand Prix was dropped after its third edition in 2013 due to tax and bureaucratic hurdles.

Formula 1, owned by Liberty Media, has not yet commented on the prospect of returning to India.

Adani, which is set to acquire debt ridden Jaypee Group’s assets including the Formula 1 track in Greater Noida, has expressed its desire to revive the high-profile race in India. The sport has significantly grown in popularity since Liberty Media took over in 2017. It currently has a record 24-race calendar, though two rounds scheduled in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain this month were cancelled due to the West Asia conflict.

In March, Mandaviya met Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI) to explore the potential of how to bring F1 and MotoGP to India.

“We explored the potential of bringing Formula One and MotoGP to India. The ministry is enthusiastic and clear that, given India’s advancement in technology, it deserves the best sports,” Vicky Chandhok, who led FMSCI during the last F1 races, had said after the meeting.

“They sought to understand the challenges and assess our organisational capabilities. The minister and the ministry are very supportive,” he added.

There are indications that FMSCI could facilitate meeting between Mandaviya and the Formula One management, headed by former Ferrari team boss Stefano Domenicali.

“The revival effort is also being aligned with national sporting priorities. Integrating motorsports within this broader framework could help nurture talent early and create a strong pipeline of drivers, technicians, and motorsport professionals,” PTI quoted a source as saying.
