A retired IAS officer from Chhattisgarh has been accused of accepting a bribe worth Rs 45 lakhs to secure a Deputy Collector’s position for an individual. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has now arrested him in connection with this case.
This case revolves around former Chhattisgarh IAS Taman Singh Sonwani, who served as the chairman of the Chhattisgarh Public Service Commission (CGPSC). It has been claimed that Sonwani had accepted a bribe of Rs 45 lakh to appoint the son and daughter-in-law of a Raipur-based steel company owner as Deputy Collectors.
The company owner, Shravan Kumar Goyal, reportedly transferred this sum in two instalments. The CBI has apprehended both individuals involved in this alleged transaction.
Taman Singh Sonwani had cleared the State Administrative Service (PCS) exam in 1991. Following this, he was promoted to the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), becoming a 2004 batch officer. He opted for voluntary retirement (VRS) and subsequently assumed the role of CGPSC chairman on June 2, 2020, a position he held until September 8, 2023.
Sonwani stands accused of engaging in irregularities during CGPSC recruitments. A candidate from the Balod district lodged a complaint alleging that despite clearing the preliminary and main examinations for the 2021 State Administrative Service Examination and performing well in the interview, they were not selected. The complaint further alleged that Sonwani’s son, nephew, and other relatives were selected for various posts.
In response to these serious allegations, the Chhattisgarh government recommended a CBI inquiry into the alleged recruitment scam within the CGPSC. Following their investigation, the CBI arrested the former chairman and several others in the case. The CBI’s findings revealed that numerous ineligible candidates were selected during the PCS recruitment examination during Sonwani’s tenure.
