Employee Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has made it clear that the deadline for linking Aadhaar with UAN will not be extended any more.

Especially in the North East region (Assam, Arunachal, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura) and certain categories of employers will not be able to file ECR (Electronic Challan cum Return) from the wage month of November 2025.

EPFO has given this information by issuing a circular. These states were given the last chance till 31 October 2025. Now no extension will be available. These employers will stop filing ECR from November, meaning they will not be able to deposit PF contribution.

What is ECR and why is it important?

This is an online file of EPFO, in which every month the company fills the complete record of PF salary, PF deduction and deposit of its employees. That is, how much amount the company is deducting from your PF and how much it is depositing, all this is recorded in ECR. The company cannot deposit the PF amount without submitting ECR.

What was said in the PFO circular?

  • The requirement of Aadhaar-UAN verification was implemented from June 1, 2021.
  • Given the complexities in the initial years, employers and employees were given several extensions of the deadline.
  • The most recent deadline was October 31, 2025, which was last extended as per the Labor Ministry’s communication dated October 28, 2025.
  • EPFO said that adequate opportunities have been given in the last four years and the number of pending cases is now very less.

Why is UAN activation necessary?

To claim benefits like EPF or EDLI, the first condition is that the employee’s UAN is active and linked to Aadhaar. An active UAN ensures the employee’s identity with EPFO and all related records are properly updated. This not only enables one to avail the benefits of insurance but also facilitates pension (EPS), PF withdrawal and other claims.

Which people are required to get UAN activation done?

To avail all the services of EPFO, it is necessary to activate UAN. Special attention needs to be paid especially to those people whose Aadhaar is not linked to UAN. Also, if your employer has added you to the scheme but has not done the UAN activation, then you should also get the UAN activated immediately.

How to activate UAN?

The process of UAN activation is online and easy. Employees can complete this in a few simple steps by visiting EPFO’s member portal…

  • Visit EPFO site- https://uniedportal-mem.epndia.gov.in.
  • Click on ‘Activate UAN’ link.
  • Fill UAN, Name, DOB, Aadhaar Number and Mobile Number.
  • Verify with OTP received on mobile.
  • Set login credentials.

After completion of activation, employees can check their PF balance, claim status and KYC updates online.
