With Diwali all set to light up the city of Hyderabad, it was Bengal Warriorz captain Fazel Atrachali, who kicked off the celebrations a little early during PKL Season 11, when he achieved the unique milestone of 500 tackle points – the highest ever in the history of the PKL.
Fazel, who is fondly known as The Sultan and is the most successful defender in the history of the PKL, reached the milestone when he scored his third tackle point in the Bengal Warriorz’s game against the Puneri Paltan, which ended in a tie.
A two-time PKL winner, Fazel spoke at length about what the moment meant for him.
He said, “I never imagined that one day, I would be the most successful defender in the PKL. When I started playing kabaddi, people told me I’m not good enough and I should try pursuing another sport. From that day, to this day, it’s been 21 years. In 2013, they said Fazel is not a good enough player. They said the same thing in 2016 as well. Every season, they think my time is done. Now, I’m 32 years old and I have 500 tackle points. That makes me really happy because the first time I came here, nobody believed in me. 10 years ago, I wanted one chance to play on the mat, and after a lot of hard work, a lot of injuries and being away from family, I have to be happy with the success. A big thank you everybody who have helped me in my journey.”
An emotional Fazel further added, “I want to dedicate this moment to my family. When I came here, they had a lot of problems without me. I have two kids; they’re always missing me. I want this dedicate this moment to my daughters.”
Reflecting on the draw against the defending champions Puneri Paltan, the talismanic skipper said he was happy with the result. He also praised the young Sushil Kambrekar, saying, “I’m glad Sushil was a success today as well. I’m happy with the result. Three points are better than zero points. Our team played so well tonight. We are getting better with each game and that is a great thing for our team. I think every match we will keep on getting better.”
