In Renigunta Mandal of Tirupati district in Andhra Pradesh, a remarkable innovation came to the fore: a bus shelter constructed from plastic bottles. This eco-friendly structure has garnered admiration for its cost-effectiveness and sustainable design.
The harmful effects of plastic waste, including its impact on health and climate change, are widely recognised. To address the same, officials from the Thookivakam Gram Panchayat in Tirupati District’s Renigunta Mandal introduced an innovative solution.
How This Idea Came?
Tukivakam village, situated on the Tirupati-Chennai highway, sees thousands of tourists and traders daily. However, the absence of a bus shelter forced villagers to wait on the roadside, exposed to harsh weather conditions.
This posed difficulties for people with health issues and the elderly. Noticing the villagers’ struggles, panchayat officials, in collaboration with Village Sarpanch Muni Shekhar Reddy, collected plastic bottles, tyres, foils, and useless waste equipment.
The bottles were collected from the garbage collected by the Gram Panchayat. This waste supports the plastic bottles, creating a sturdy structure.
Economic Benefits
Typically, the cost for bus shelter construction ranges from Rs 1-5 lakh, with durable ones reaching ₹50 lakh. In contrast, this innovative shelter was built in 10 days using over 2,000 plastic bottles at a mere Rs 10-11 thousand.
With villagers’ help, the shelter features beautifully arranged green grass and flowers, making it an attractive spot for passengers. “I’ve never seen a bus shelter like this,” said a passenger. “It’s a great idea to provide relief from the sun and rain, showcasing the potential of waste transformation.”
Initially sceptical, locals now praise the shelter’s benefits. Sarpanch Muni Shekhar Reddy noted that the eco-friendly bus stop has received positive feedback from tourists.
Encouraged by the success, officials are preparing to set up two more shelters in the area, further promoting sustainability.
