Congress has responded to the Election Commission on the terrorist statement of party president Mallikarjun Kharge. The party said that neither the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) nor any law has been violated in this case. The Congress, in its reply, alleged that the Election Commission’s notice was “mala fide” and issued without proper investigation. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh, in a letter to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, said that the party received two different notices of the same number, signed by different officials. He said that in one notice, TMC leader Derek O’Brien has been named as the complainant, while in the other notice, this name has been removed. This raises questions on the functioning of the commission. Congress also objected that only 24 hours were given to reply, which is not enough in the election season. The party has sought one week’s time to file a detailed reply. In the letter, Congress also termed the recent statements of Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah as a violation of MCC and said that the Election Commission did not take any action in these matters. Congress says that the attitude of the Commission is against the principles of “natural justice” and it is not showing impartiality in this matter. Kharge had said – Modi is like a terrorist. The Election Commission (EC) had on Wednesday issued a notice to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge asking him to clarify his stand within 24 hours. This notice was issued by the Commission after receiving complaints from senior BJP leader and Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and other party officials.
