Delhi University revised its 2025-26 admission rules, now using Class 10 marks to break ties instead of alphabetical order

For admission to undergraduate programmes at Delhi University, candidates must apply via the Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS) portal. The application process for the academic year 2025–26 is now underway, with an impressive 83,296 registrations recorded within the first week. This year, several important changes have been introduced to the admission procedure, and prospective applicants are advised to familiarise themselves with these updates before submitting their applications.
Updated Tie-Breaking Criteria
A major revision in this year’s admission policy concerns the tie-breaking rules. In previous years, in cases where candidates had identical scores, seats were occasionally allocated based on the alphabetical order of names.
However, Delhi University has now implemented a ‘direct auto-accept’ system for seat allocation and has amended the tie-breaking formula to incorporate Class 10 examination results. Specifically, the average marks across all subjects in a candidate’s Class 10 results will now be used to resolve admission ties.
Professor Haneet Gandhi, Dean of Admissions at Delhi University, explained that last year’s reliance on raw data sometimes necessitated the use of alphabetical ordering to allocate seats. This year, the University has opted for a more rational, merit-based approach. The inclusion of Class 10 results ensures a fairer and more academically grounded system for resolving tie situations.
Previous Tie-Breaking Procedure
- Until 2024, Delhi University applied the following criteria to resolve admission ties:
- Preference was given to the candidate with the highest percentage in their best three subjects at A-Level (Class 12).
- If a tie remained, the total marks across the best four and then five subjects were considered.
- Should the tie persist, the older candidate was given preference.
- As a last resort, admission was based on the alphabetical order of the applicant’s name.
CSAS Process At A Glance
Delhi University offers 71,624 undergraduate seats across 79 programmes in 69 affiliated colleges. The popular BA Programme now features 186 different subject combinations. Many candidates are currently awaiting the results of the CUET-UG 2025 examination, following which the second phase of the CSAS process will begin where students list their course and college preferences.
The admission process officially commenced on June 17, 2025, and the University expects to begin classes from August 1, 2025.
