The Delhi High Court has mandated that every college must implement a 5 per cent reservation under the Extra Curricular Activities (ECA) and Sports Quota. The story starts with Aditi Rawat, a gold medalist in CBSE’s national lawn tennis. Since she was a minor, her mother, Anita Rawat, filed a petition in the High Court, demanding a sports quota seat in Hindu College for the 2025-26 session, arguing that DU’s rules were not being followed.
DU Admission: What Is DU’s Policy?
Aditi’s lawyers, Jitendra Gupta, Bharat Rawat, and Ashish Mishra, contended that DU’s policy requires every college to reserve 5 per cent of its total seats for ECA and sports quota. However, Hindu College allocated only 10 seats each for ECA and sports out of 956 seats, while 47 seats should have been reserved. This led to the court case.
Hindu College argued that the quota mentioned in DU’s information booklet was not mandatory. Nonetheless, DU clarified through an affidavit in court that the 5 per cent reservation must be implemented in all circumstances.
Justice Vikas Mahajan stated that DU’s affidavit left no doubt about the necessity of the 5 per cent quota. The court firmly declared that all colleges must adhere to this rule moving forward. Since the admission process for the 2025-26 session is complete and Aditi has been admitted to Lady Shri Ram College through the sports quota, she did not receive relief for this session.
Lawyer Gupta mentioned that DU has issued a notice for spot admission. The court clarified that this notice pertains only to regular seats and does not apply to the ECA/sports supernumerary quota. The petitioner demanded strict adherence to the rules in the future, supported by DU’s lawyer. The court ordered that all colleges must provide a 5 per cent reservation following DU’s guidelines from now on.
