Why did such circumstances arise?
Iran was jointly attacked by America and Israel on 28 February 2026. The two countries together carried out hundreds of airstrikes on several Iranian military bases, missile sites, nuclear facilities and leadership. Many high officials including Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei were killed in these attacks. America named it Operation Epic Fury.
This war led to tension and supply disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. 80-85% of India’s LPG is imported from here. India is the second largest LPG importer in the world and more than 60% of LPG comes from outside.
Due to this, there was a situation like LPG shortage in India, but the Government of India continuously appealed to the people to avoid rumours. The government said that there is no shortage of LPG and oil in the country.

Nanda Devi and Shivalik ships reach India with LPG
India’s ship Nanda Devi crossed the Strait of Hormuz and reached Vadinar Port in Gujarat on Tuesday. About 46,500 metric tons of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) was brought in this ship. Deendayal Port Authority Chairman Sushil Kumar Singh said that this gas will be transferred from one ship to another in the sea itself.
Earlier, Indian ship Shivalik had reached Mundra Port with LPG on Monday. There are about 46 thousand metric tons of LPG on this ship, which is equivalent to approximately 32.4 lakh domestic gas cylinders.

46,500 metric tonnes of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) was brought aboard Nanda Devi, which reached India.
Refineries ordered to increase production
Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary, Petroleum Ministry, said, ‘The situation is worrying, but we are trying to provide supplies to domestic consumers as before.’
The government has directed domestic refineries to increase their production and reserve it directly for domestic kitchens. Supply was cut for commercial uses like hotels and restaurants, which is now being gradually restored.
States that speed up PNG network will get more gas
The central government on Wednesday promised that the states which will accelerate the work of laying piped natural gas (PNG) network will be given priority in the supply of commercial LPG. Its objective is to reduce the dependence on traditional LPG cylinders, so that in future such international crises do not directly impact Indian kitchens.
