Dream11, one of India’s top real-money gaming (RMG) companies, on Friday announced to shut down all its paid gaming contests and pivot its business to a free-to-play online social game, after the Parliament passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025.
In a statement issued by the company on its social media platforms, it said, “This morning, we stopped all paid contests on Dream11 and pivoted entirely to a free-to-play online social game.”
In the statement, the company reflected on its journey, saying, “When we started this journey 18 years ago as a Sports Tech company, we were not even 1% of the size of the USA Fantasy Sports industry. Dream11’s Fantasy Sports product was our way to ‘Make Sports Better’ for all of India. With this passion, belief, and the spirit of Made in India, for India, by Indians, we became the largest fantasy sports platform in the world.”
Dream11 further asserted that it is a law-abiding company and will continue to comply with the new rules. While the company expressed that “progressive regulations would have been the right way forward,” it said that it fully respects the government’s decision and will comply with the Promotion & Regulation of Online Gaming Law, 2025.
It further said Dream Sports has a collection of exceptional sports technology companies, such as FanCode, DreamSetGo, and Dream Game Studios.
“Along with our Dream Sports Foundation, these will continue to power our vision to “Make Sports Better” and support our Hon’ble Prime Minister’s ambition of making India a global sporting superpower,” it said.
“Thank you for all your love and trust. See you in our second innings,” it concluded.
Dream11’s announcement came after President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent to The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, that was passed by Parliament this week. The Bill was passed in Lok Sabha on Wednesday and in Rajya Sabha a day after.
The Bill was brought in to encourage e-sports and online social games while prohibiting harmful online money gaming services, advertisements, and financial transactions related to them. The Bill seeks to completely ban offering, operating, or facilitating online money games, irrespective of whether based on skill, chance, or both.
The government cited the potential psychological harm caused by these platforms as a key reason behind the decision.
Through this legislation, the government aims to promote e-sports and give them legal recognition. This bill will help provide legal support to e-sports.
