Premier League side Aston Villa registered a 2-1 win over Young Boys at Villa Park in the UEFA Europa League encounter between the sides on Friday as Dutchman Donyell Malen netted a double in a game marked by Swiss away fans disrupting proceedings.
Dutchman Malen found the back of the net for the Villans in the first period of the game before Joel Monteiro pulled back a consolation for the Swiss outfit.
Villa boss Unai Emery lauded the impact the Dutchman has had on the side stating, “He’s very motivated and he’s playing like he’s training. Everything he’s achieving now, we can see it before in the training sessions.”
“His qualities help him to score goals and get assists, but how he threatens opponents behind with his speed is very important for us. He’s clinical when he has chances to score,” Emery added.
Villa capitalised on their early pressure in the 27th minute when Youri Tielemans delivered a cross into the box. Malen rose between two defenders to powerfully head the ball, which the keeper could only deflect onto the post before it went into the net.
Young Boys remained defensive, allowing Villa to dominate three minutes before the break. Morgan Rogers sent Malen through on goal, where he evaded a defender and calmly placed his shot into the far corner.
Play was halted for a few minutes after the goal as police managed disturbances in the away end. Young Boys captain Loris Benito appealed for calm as fans threw objects onto the pitch, a recurring issue during the game.
After the break, Malen found the net again, but his hat-trick was denied due to Rogers being offside in the build-up. The visitors nearly pulled one back with their first chance, but Chris Bedia’s goal was disallowed.
The Swiss unit, Young Boys, scored in the 90th minute through Joel Monteiro, who controlled a floated ball into the box before firing it home. However, the Swiss side was unable to stage a remarkable comeback, having offered little at Villa Park.
