Rishi Sunak said he “disappointed” his parents by not becoming a doctor, recalling the strong emphasis on education in Indian-origin families, in a podcast trailer released online.

Former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said he “disappointed” his parents by not becoming a doctor, reflecting on the importance placed on education in many Indian-origin households, in a podcast trailer released on Instagram by Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath.
In the trailer, Sunak spoke about the values emphasised by his parents while he was growing up.
“You know, for my parents, it was all about education,” Sunak said.
Kamath responded, “It’s actually a very Indian thing.”
Rishi’s wife, Akshata Murty, agreed, saying, “It’s a very Indian thing, correct. Exactly that. We value education.”
Sunak added that education was seen “as the passport, as a way for a better life,” underscoring the role academic achievement often plays in shaping aspirations within immigrant families.
‘I DISAPPOINTED THEM BY NOT BECOMING A DOCTOR’
During the interaction, Kamath pointed out that Murty’s parents are frequently discussed in public discourse, but not Rishi’s.
“I hear about Akshata’s parents a lot. Never about yours,” Kamath said.
Akshata, referring to Rishi’s parents, replied, “They’re awesome.”
Sunak then remarked, “I disappointed them by not becoming a doctor.”
Kamath responded, “I think you did fine,” prompting Sunak to say, “I did, it’s okay.”
The exchange captured a lighter moment in the conversation while highlighting expectations often associated with traditional professional careers, such as medicine.
DISCUSSIONS ON EDUCATION, FAMILY AND RELATIONSHIPS
The trailer also showed the couple responding jointly to questions about how they would approach their children’s career choices.
When asked whether they would send their daughters to engineering college, both Sunak and Murty said, “If that’s what they were passionate about.”
Kamath also observed that the couple often appear to finish each other’s sentences.
“Are you guys like this at home?” Kamath asked.
“Having interesting conversations, you mean?” Murty responded.
“You finish each other’s lines off,” Kamath said.
“I think we are,” Murty replied, adding, “I think our destination is always the same. But our approaches are quite different.”
Sunak agreed, saying, “Yeah.”
REFLECTIONS ON POLITICS AND PUBLIC LIFE
Kamath also asked Sunak about the experience of becoming Prime Minister.
“Last night, a bunch of kids were asking me, ‘Why don’t you become a politician?’ I’ve never thought of it. But I really want to know, how does it feel?” Kamath said.
“Like, the day you figured you’re becoming Prime Minister, did you sit at home and you’re like, this happened?”
“I didn’t have time,” Sunak replied.
In another segment of the trailer, Kamath asked about losing political power.
“Rishi, we spoke about you coming into the position of Prime Minister. How is it to lose that position? What did you learn from it?” Kamath said.
Murty also reflected on personal identity and relationships, with the discussion touching on marriage and partnership.
“I mean, I without question could not function if we weren’t married,” Sunak said in a separate trailer clip.
“It’s called soulmates,” Murty added.
WHAT RISHI SUNAK IS DOING NOW
After stepping down as Prime Minister in July 2024, Sunak took on several advisory and academic roles, according to reports by the BBC and AFP.
According to a July 2025 BBC report, Sunak joined Goldman Sachs as a senior adviser, working part-time to advise clients on global politics and the economy.
Goldman Sachs chairman and chief executive David Solomon said he was “excited to welcome Rishi back” to the firm.
The report mentioned that Sunak’s salary from the role would be donated to The Richmond Project, a charity he founded with Murty to improve numeracy across the UK.
The report also noted that Sunak previously worked at Goldman Sachs as an analyst in the early 2000s before entering politics.
Sunak continues to serve as the Conservative MP for Richmond and Northallerton in Yorkshire, the BBC said in its July 2025 report.
However, according to an October 2025 AFP report, Sunak also took up advisory roles at Microsoft and artificial intelligence startup Anthropic.
The AFP report said Sunak would provide “high-level strategic perspectives on macro-economic and geopolitical trends” in his role as a part-time senior adviser.
Anthropic said it was “pleased to welcome Rishi Sunak,” adding that his experience would provide “valuable strategic perspective as we work to ensure AI benefits humanity,” AFP reported.
