As Delhi-NCR’s air quality turns ‘severe’, schools shift to hybrid mode for classes up to 5 under GRAP Stage 3.
The air quality across Delhi-NCR dropped to the ‘severe’ category on Tuesday, forcing the Centre to implement stricter anti-pollution measures under Stage 3 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) said the move was necessary as Delhi’s average Air Quality Index (AQI) rose sharply from 362 on Monday to 425 on Tuesday morning.

Calm winds, a stable atmosphere, and unfavourable weather conditions have trapped pollutants close to the surface, worsening the air quality across the region. Authorities have warned that the situation may persist if weather conditions remain unchanged over the next few days. (Representational Image/File)

Following the implementation of GRAP Stage 3, schools in the National Capital Region will switch to a hybrid mode for classes up to 5. Students will have the option to choose between online and physical classes, while schools for higher grades will continue in the offline mode.

Under Stage 3 restrictions, the use of BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel four-wheelers is prohibited in Delhi and adjoining NCR districts, with exemptions for persons with disabilities. Authorities have urged vehicle owners to strictly adhere to these restrictions to help reduce vehicular emissions. (Representational Image/File)

Additionally, all non-essential construction and demolition activities have been completely halted. This includes work such as earth excavation, piling, laying of sewer lines or electric cables through open trenches, and the operation of Ready-Mix Concrete (RMC) plants. Private offices have also been advised to implement work-from-home or hybrid work models to reduce traffic congestion and emissions. The restrictions also include a ban on inter-state diesel buses entering or operating in Delhi, as well as a ban on diesel generator sets, except for emergency and essential services.
