The Delhi Directorate of Education will implement the 6+ age rule for Class 1 admissions from the 2026-27 academic session, in alignment with NEP 2020.

The Delhi Directorate of Education (DoE) has announced that a uniform minimum age of six years will be required for admission to Class 1 starting from the 2026-27 academic session. This change will be implemented by restructuring the foundational stage, which includes nursery and kindergarten classes.

“The Directorate of Education, GNCT of Delhi intends to implement the provisions of NEP 2020 and the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009 relating to restructuring of Foundational Stage and concerning minimum age criteria of 6+ years for Class I,” the directorate said in a circular dated June 20.

The DoE stated that all heads of government, government-aided, and recognised unaided private schools under its jurisdiction have been informed about the revised guidelines. These include changes to the foundational stage and the implementation of the new age criteria for Class 1 admissions.

According to the official circular, foundational stage admissions will now align with the National Education Policy (NEP) structure and will include three years of pre-primary education prior to Class 1.

Revised Age Structure for Admission
As per the new framework introduced by the Directorate of Education, the age criteria for admission to pre-primary and Class 1 will be regulated as follows:

  • Nursery (Bal Vatika / Preschool 1): 3+ years

  • Lower KG (BAL Vatika / preschool 2): 4+ years

  • Upper KG (BAL Vatika / preschool 3): 5+ years

  • Class 1: 6+ years

The DoE also mentioned that the nomenclature of pre-primary classes—such as nursery, lower KG, and upper KG—is flexible and can be modified as required.

To ensure inclusivity and transparency, the directorate has invited inputs from all stakeholders, including teachers, parents, students, school management committees, educational institutions, school associations, professionals, subject experts, scholars, and the general public.

“It is essential to make the process inclusive and participatory by giving everyone an opportunity to share their views and suggestions on various aspects of the proposed mechanism,” the DoE stated.
