Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport has been named the Best Airport in India and South Asia at the 2026 World Airport Awards by Skytrax, strengthening its position as the country’s leading aviation hub. The airport also improved its global standing, rising to 28th place this year from 32nd in 2025.
Operated by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), led by GMR Airports Limited, the facility remains the only Indian airport to feature among the world’s top 30. It also recorded a sharp jump in the category of airports handling over 70 million passengers annually, securing the third spot in 2026, up from eighth last year.
The recognition marks the eighth consecutive year since 2019 that Delhi Airport has received the regional top honour, reflecting sustained improvements in passenger services, infrastructure, and operational efficiency.
Global hub with rising passenger focus
The Skytrax awards are based on a global survey of travellers from over 100 nationalities, conducted over seven months. The assessment covers key parameters such as service quality, airport facilities, and overall passenger experience.
Apart from the top regional award, Delhi Airport was ranked second for Best Airport Staff in India and South Asia and seventh among the world’s best airports for layovers. These rankings indicate a growing emphasis on passenger comfort and transit efficiency.
Over the years, the airport has evolved into a key transit point connecting South East Asia with Europe and North America. Its expanding network and improved connectivity have positioned it as a major global gateway.
DIAL CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar said the recognition reflects the airport’s commitment to service quality and continuous improvement. “This honour motivates us to enhance our services and infrastructure while maintaining global standards,” he said, dedicating the achievement to passengers, employees, and partners.
Investment in technology and expansion
Officials said Delhi Airport continues to invest in infrastructure expansion, sustainability measures, and technology-driven solutions aimed at streamlining passenger movement. Initiatives such as digital processing, improved terminal facilities, and operational upgrades have contributed to the airport’s rising rankings.
GMR Airports Limited, which manages multiple airports in India and overseas, has focused on building integrated airport ecosystems through its aerotropolis model. The company also supports aviation training and maintenance services, strengthening the broader sector.
With steady passenger growth and ongoing upgrades, Delhi Airport is expected to play a central role in India’s aviation expansion. Its consistent performance in global rankings signals a shift towards higher service benchmarks and increased international competitiveness.
