On October 20, ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ completed 30 years of its release. Anupam Kher, who played the role of Shahrukh Khan’s cool father in the film, has shared his memories related to it.
In one of his recent interviews he said that he always knew that this film would be special. This film changed the grammar and rhythm of Indian cinema. Because of this it became a cult film.
Recalling the screening of the film, the actor said, ‘When the screening ended, there was silence for a minute. That one minute felt as if six hours had passed.
Everyone was just absorbing what they saw. And then the entire theater erupted in applause. The process of standing ovation was not stopping. That’s when we realized that this film has touched people deeply.
Anupam said that Aditya Chopra’s film broke many cinematic traditions. Especially regarding one’s parents and hero. This film has broken the myth.
The film’s hero Raj waits for the girl’s father’s permission instead of running away with her. It was revolutionary for its time.

This film was released on 20 October 1995. Anupam Kher also received the Filmfare Award for Best Comedian for his role.
While talking about the scenes of the film, Anupam also told his favorite scene. He mentioned the iconic scene filmed between him and Shahrukh Khan, in which he says to Shahrukh – ‘We had failed in India, you showed it by failing in London.’
Anupam said about this scene – That scene was very special. Shahrukh is an expert in improvisation and we had a lot of fun experimenting.
Regarding his role of cool dad in the film, he said – Even today people tell me that I wish my father was like the father of DDLJ. People had never seen such a father on screen before.
A person who was not just a guardian but a motivating friend. DDLJ gave the best father of the 90s.
