Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) has made CNG costlier by ₹2 per kg in Mumbai and surrounding areas. Along with this, the price of domestic piped natural gas (PNG) has also been increased by 50 paise per standard cubic meter (SCM). The new rates have come into effect from midnight of May 29-30. Here the price of CNG has increased from ₹84 per kg to ₹86 per kg. At the same time, the price of domestic PNG has now become ₹52 per SCM. This is the second increase in fuel prices in 15 days. Earlier on May 13-14 also, gas prices were increased by ₹2. Prices increased due to shortage of domestic gas and weak rupee. Company officials said that the allocation of domestic gas has decreased. Because of this the company has to depend on high cost external sources. Along with this, the decline in the Indian Rupee against the US Dollar has also increased the total cost considerably. Despite the increase, CNG is cheaper than petrol and diesel. MGL claims that natural gas is still one of the most economical fuels available in the market. According to the company, compared to the current fuel rates in Mumbai, use of CNG gives savings of about 45% compared to petrol and about 12% compared to diesel. Demand to increase fare by ₹ 2 to ₹ 3 after CNG becomes expensive. After this increase, auto-rickshaw and taxi unions have started demanding increase in fare by ₹ 2 to ₹ 3. This is because their operating costs have increased. CNG ecosystem in Mumbai Metropolitan Region (Note: After the addition of about 2 lakh new vehicles in the last one year, the total number of vehicles dependent on CNG in this region has now crossed 12 lakh.)
