CJI Gawai said, ‘I have known Justice Dhulia since coming to the Supreme Court. He is a very hot and dedicated person to the judiciary. His contribution will always be remembered. He will be one of those judges who will immediately vacate their government housing after retirement.

Chief Justice Gawai said these things 7 days after the former CJI Chandrachud’s government residence was vacated. Former Chief Justice Chandrachud retired on 10 November 2024, but he vacated the government bungalow on 1 August 2025 after 265 days.

The former CJI had also told, ‘I had informed Sanjeev Khanna, who was the Chief Justice on 28 April, that I am looking for a suitable house. Let me allow me in this bungalow till June 30, but no response was received.

Chandrachud also said that he had also spoken to Chief Justice BR Gawai and assured him that he would leave the bungalow as soon as possible.

Chandrachud sought permission till 30 April It was said in the official letter of the Supreme Court- Former CJI Chandrachud then wrote to CJI, Sanjeev Khanna, a month after retirement, it would be more convenient for me to allow me to stay in the existing bungalow 5, Krishna Menon Marg till 30 April 2025.

Former CJI Sanjeev Khanna agreed to this. Former CJI Chandrachud got permission to stay in Krishna Menon Marg Bungalow from 11 December to 30 April 2025. For this, former CJI Chandrachud had to pay a license fee of Rs 5430 every month.

Former CJI Chandrachud was living in type VIII bungalow even after retirement

Former CJI Chandrachud retired on 10 November 2024. According to government rules, Chief Justice deserves type VIII (Type-8) bungalow during his tenure. After retirement, he can stay in type VII (type 7) bungalow for 6 months. During this time they will not have to pay rent.

The time of 8 months has passed since former Chief Justice Chandrachud retired. Since retirement, he has been living in the allotted type VIII bungalow allotted himself.

This also happened because two of his successors (former Chief Justice Sanjeev Khanna and current Chief Justice BR Gawai) did not take 5, Krishna Menon Marg Bungalow after former CJI Chandrachud. Both of them are living in their old bungalow.
