Now you will be able to change your boarding station up to 30 minutes before the departure of the train. Along with this, the slab of refund available on cancellation of confirmed tickets has also been changed.
Under this, now 50% refund will be given if the ticket is canceled 8 hours before the departure time of the train. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav gave this information in a press conference today.
He said that Railways has made changes in the cancellation and boarding rules to stop black marketing of tickets. The new rules will be implemented in different phases between April 1 and 15, 2026.
Railway Minister told why this decision was necessary
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that this change has been made keeping in mind the pattern of ticket brokers. Brokers would often book extra tickets and if customers were not found, they would cancel them just before the departure of the train and take refunds.
Tightening the refund rules will reduce ‘cornering’ of tickets by brokers and will increase the chances of common passengers getting confirmed tickets.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav gave information about the new rules of Railways related to train ticket cancellation and boarding.
Now stations can be changed even after chart preparation
Railway Ministry has extended the deadline for changing the boarding station. Now passengers will be able to change their boarding point up to 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time of the train. Till now this facility was available only before the chart was prepared.
This rule will prove to be very helpful in those big cities where there is more than one railway station, passengers will be able to catch the train from any nearest station as per their convenience.
Passengers can change their boarding station through IRCTC website, app or railway counter. However, once the boarding point is changed, you will not be able to catch the train from the old station.
Half refund was available till 4 hours ago
Compared to the old rules, the new rules have become a little stricter for the passengers. Now the amount of refund will depend on how long before the departure of the train you are canceling the ticket.
Earlier, flat charge was deducted till 48 hours before the departure of the train. 25% refund was given if the ticket was canceled between 48 to 12 hours and 50% refund was given if the ticket was canceled between 12 to 4 hours. Now for 50% refund it will be necessary to cancel the ticket at least 8 hours in advance. For the time being, the old charges (₹20 + GST) for waiting and RAC tickets will remain in effect.
Full refund will be given if the train is late by more than 3 hours.
Railways has clarified that in certain circumstances the old rules of refund will continue. If the train is completely canceled or delayed by more than 3 hours from its scheduled time, passengers can claim full refund by filing TDR.
Additionally, if a ticket remains completely waitlisted even after charting, it will be automatically canceled and full refund will be given.
