CBSE releases the new school curriculum for class 9 students on Thursday It mandates a third language from Class 6 starting the 2026-27 academic session. This means, every student will be required to study at least two Indian languages along with a third language.
The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 too proposes that students study three languages up to Class 10, in contrast to the existing arrangement where they typically learn only two.
CBSE Chairman Rahul Singh clarified that the third language, termed R3, will not yet be compulsory for Class 9 students. R3 level textbooks will be introduced in Class 6 this year. These students will appear for their board exams in 2031, and at that point the entire framework will be revised, fully implementing the three-language formula, he said at the launch of CBSE’s new secondary school curriculum.
As explained by CBSE earlier, in schools where English is taught in Class 6, it will be considered the foreign language, and students will also study two Indian languages. If students choose another foreign language such as French or German, they must also study two Indian languages.
Vocational Education Mandatory
Furthermore, under the revised curriculum, art education, vocational education, and physical education will become compulsory for classes 9 and 10. Textbooks will be introduced for art education and physical education. In the current academic year, Class 10 students will undergo school-based assessments for art and physical education.

From the 2027-28 academic session, vocational education will be introduced as a compulsory subject with an annual or board examination, while art and physical education will continue to be evaluated through internal, school-based assessments.
Besides, computational thinking and artificial intelligence will also become compulsory subjects in classes 9 and 10. Initially, they will be introduced as modules with internal assessments in the current academic session and will be upgraded to a compulsory board exam subject for Class 10 in 2029. These subjects are also being introduced for classes 3 to 8 in the current academic year.
