The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced the class 10 and class 12 board exam datesheet 2025 about 86 days before the commencement of the tests. The exams will begin on February 15. The class 10 exams will conclude on March 18 and class 12 on April 4. Around 44 lakh students are expected to appear for the examinations, which will be conducted across India and in 26 countries abroad. The board had earlier announced a significant change in the board question paper format this year.
There will be an increase in the competency-based questions in the Board Exam 2025 for class 12. These questions will test the practical applications of the knowledge of the students. It has been designed to assess the ability of students to apply theoretical language to practical use. There will be more such questions in the exam, for which problem-solving skills will have to be used. This decision has been taken keeping in mind the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

The exam format of CBSE Class 10th will remain the same as the previous academic session. As per last year’s format, 50 per cent of the questions will be competency-based. However, 40 per cent of competency-based questions were asked in the class 12 exam last year which has now been increased to 50 per cent. Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ), case-based, and source-based integrated questions will include competency-based situations.
This means, there will be a slight reduction in the number of constructed response questions like short answer and long answer questions in both CBSE class 10th and 12th exams.
Meanwhile, to be eligible to sit for the board examinations, students must maintain a minimum attendance of 75 per cent. The board offers a 25 per cent relaxation in attendance requirements for students facing specific circumstances such as medical emergencies, participation in National or International sports tournaments, or other serious reasons, provided they submit the necessary documentation.
CBSE is also planning biometric authentication through digital fingerprint capturing, photo capturing, and face matching with scanned photos of candidates for authentication during and after the examinations.
Beginning with the 2025-26 academic year, CBSE will reintroduce the concept of two-term board exams, with exams being held twice per year. By offering two-term exams from 2026 onwards, students will gain additional opportunities to demonstrate their learning progress over the academic year, while CBSE works on finalizing the logistical aspects of this two-term system.
