A 25-year-old PhD scholar at a public research institution in Kalyani in West Bengal’s Nadia died in a hospital on late Thursday night, hours after allegedly attempting suicide on campus over the administration ignoring his complaints of ragging, officials said.
The deceased was identified as Anamitra Roy, who hailed from Shyamnagar in North 24 Parganas, and was pursuing PhD in Biology at Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research. He was found unconscious in a laboratory that evening and was rushed to AIIMS, Kalyani, where he died on Friday morning, they added.
Scholar Alleges Ragging, Institutional Apathy In Final Note
Hours before attempting the extreme step, the scholar had posted a long note on social media, detailing how the institute allegedly ignored his complaints of ragging, which pushed him to the brink.
In the note, he claimed years of personal struggles, including childhood abuse, autism, and recurrent depression.
He alleged that he and several colleagues were subjected to harassment by a fellow PhD student – Sourabh Biswas – in recent months. Despite repeated complaints to his supervisor, Anindita Bhadra, and to the institute’s anti-ragging cell, he alleged that no action was taken.
He wrote that a lab incident took place on April 12 this year, where Biswas allegedly shouted at him for an extended period. Roy filed formal complaints with the higher authorities at the institute; however, he allegedly received no response from the administration.
He further claimed that members of the Students’ Affairs Council and his supervisor prioritised the lab’s reputation over his grievances. He alleged that his supervisor openly praised his alleged abuser’s work despite what he described as “scientific misconduct.”
