What About Other Indians At BWF World Championships?
Earlier, HS Prannoy came agonisingly close to pulling off a major upset before bowing out with a gruelling second-round loss to world No. 2 Anders Antonsen of Denmark
2023 bronze-medallist fought for nearly an hour and 30 minutes before going down 8-21, 21-17, 21-23 despite holding two match points on Wednesday night.
“Played a few bad shots towards the end. I should have kept a little more energy and tried to be on the attacking side. In the last 3-4 points, I felt he was on the attack and I gave him a few easy smashes that probably changed the game.
“I should have taken a few more chances at the net and played patiently,” Prannoy said after the loss.
Later in the day, two-time Olympic medallist P V Sindhu shocked world number two Wang Zhi Yi of China with a 21-19, 21-15 victory, also advancing to the quarterfinals.
Sindhu, ranked 15th and the 2019 world champion in Basel, needed 48 minutes to secure the win in the pre-quarterfinals.
A five-time World Championships medallist, Sindhu started strong with several sharp attacks, taking the first game 21-19 as Wang struggled with passive returns.
The Indian player maintained her momentum in the second game, clinching the match and improving her head-to-head record against Wang to 3-2.
