Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday presented the Central Government’s budget for the year 2026-27. Many announcements were made in the budget to promote tourism.
According to the announcement of the Finance Minister, the infrastructure of 50 cities of the country will be prepared for international tourists on the lines of world class level. Its objective is to make India an all-season destination and global tourist-hub.
With the help of this plan, an ecosystem will be created which will strengthen the economy of Tier 2-3 cities and villages. This will also increase the country’s forex reserve and also strengthen its cultural identity.
Tourism budget 2438.40 crores
To promote tourism, this sector got Rs 2438.40 crore in the budget. Under the 2047 vision, the government has set a target of bringing 10 crore foreign tourists to India by 2047. The World Travel and Tourism Council estimates that by 2034, the contribution of tourism to the country’s GDP could be Rs 43.25 lakh crore.
By then this sector will be able to provide employment to about 6.3 crore people. According to the India Tourism Statistics report of the Ministry of Tourism, about one crore foreign tourists visit India every year. Of these, 6-7% are Buddhist tourists. Last year 7.10 lakh Buddhist tourists came to India.
This time Rs 6,812 crore has been given for the development of North-East, which is 20% more than last time. This budget will strengthen the local economy of the North-Eastern states. Buddhist circuits will be developed in Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. This will focus on conservation of temples and monasteries, connectivity and facilities for pilgrims.
Focus on temple cities
Infrastructure facilities in cities recognized as temple cities will be developed according to the needs of international tourists. In this, the focus will be on cities like Varanasi and Mathura of Uttar Pradesh, Jammu of Jammu and Kashmir, Rishikesh and Haridwar of Uttarakhand.
In the south, Madurai and Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu, Hampi in Karnataka, Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh, Bhubaneswar and Puri in Odisha will be developed. At the same time, this list will include Bishnupur of West Bengal, Ujjain and Khajuraho of Madhya Pradesh, Dwarka of Gujarat and Pandharpur of Maharashtra.

Digital data of Indian tourist destinations will be prepared through National Destination Digital Knowledge Grid. This will attract foreign tourists.
At the local level, employment opportunities for researchers, historians, content creators, hotels, guides, transport, local handicrafts, home-stays and technical sectors will increase.
Preparing to become an all-season destination
IIM will provide 12 weeks training to 10 thousand guides of 20 major tourist destinations of the country. The rules for carrying luggage at the airport will be simple. National Institute of Hospitality will be established to provide skilled employees.
Now seaplanes will be made in our country only. The government will provide subsidy for their operation. For this, Seaplane VGF scheme will be started.
Will make 15 archaeological sites international level tourist destinations
15 archaeological sites of the country like Lothal, Dholavira, Rakhigarhi, Sarnath, Leh Palace, Adichanallur, Hastinapur will be developed as experiential cultural destinations.
Here tourists will be able to experience history in a living form. Walkways and immersive storytelling techniques will be used here for tourists.
Big Cat Summit will be held in India
The first “Global Big Cat Summit” will be organized in India this year. Two years ago, in the year 2024, India had established the International Big Cat Alliance.
Under this, attention is paid to the conservation of animals like tiger, lion, leopard, snow leopard, cheetah, jaguar, puma. In this, heads of 95 countries of the world will discuss the collective strategy for the conservation of these animals.
Environment conservation through trails tourism…will do branding through adventure tourism
Mountain trails (tracking routes) will be developed in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir. Will promote it as adventure tourism. Mountain trails will also be built in Araku Valley of the Eastern Ghats and Podhigai Malai of the Western Ghats.
Turtle trails will be built in Odisha, Karnataka and Kerala. Bird watching trails will be developed in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. These tourism models of sustainable development will protect the environment.
