Those driving bike-scooters will not have to pay any kind of toll tax on the highway. Some media reports were claiming that from July 15, those who run two-wheelers on the National Highway would also have to pay tax. The government has described these reports as fake.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) said- Two-wheelers will continue to get exemption from toll tax as before. The official handle of PIB Fact Czech has also posted this news as fake by posting on X.
NHAI said- no plan to impose toll tax
NHAI said the official statement that, there have been reports in the media that the Indian government is planning to impose toll tax on two -wheelers. NHAI wants to clarify that no such proposal is being discussed. There is no plan to impose toll tax for two -wheelers.
Two-wheelers were rumored to be fastag
For the last few days, there were reports on many news portals and social media that the government is going to impose toll tax on two-wheelers since July 15, 2025. Some even claimed that the bikes and scooters would have to get Fastag and if the rules are broken, you may have to pay a fine of up to Rs 2000. Some reports said that a toll fee of 150 rupees will have to be paid every month. However, there was no official gazette notification or government statement in these reports.
Fake news went viral after the annual pass announcement of Fastag In fact, the government had announced on June 18 that now an annual pass option will also be available for the fastag. Its price will be Rs 3,000 and will be able to travel 200 times a year with the train.
Since then, the news of imposing toll tax on two-wheeler had gone viral. But, this scheme is only for four-wheelers like car and jeep, not for two-wheelers.
Why are two-wheelers toll tax free? So far, two-wheeler vehicles have been exempted from toll tax because they have less impact on roads. Bikes and scooters cause less damage to roads than 4 wheelers and big trains, and it is also expensive to make separate toll collection systems for them. Also, when a two-wheeler is purchased, lifetime tax is already charged on it. That is why the government has kept them toll-free.
