As Bengaluru gears up for the opening clash of the IPL 2026 season, the city is also preparing for the familiar scene that comes with a packed stadium – traffic diversions, road closures, and commuter delays across the state capital.
With Royal Challengers Bengaluru set to face Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on March 28, Bengaluru city police have issued a detailed traffic advisory to manage crowds and ensure smooth movement. The measures, officials say, are aimed at preventing congestion and maintaining safety, especially after past instances of overcrowding that resulted in serious implications.
Key Roads to Be Closed or Restricted
Several roads around the stadium and adjoining areas will face full or partial closures on match day. Queens Road will be completely shut, while Balekundri Road and the CTO Junction will also remain closed.
Traffic movement will be restricted on major stretches including MG Road from Anil Kumble Circle, Raj Bhavan Road, Race Course Road, T Chowdaiah Road and St Mark’s Road. Key connecting routes such as the link road between MG Road and Cubbon Road will be closed, impacting east-west movement across the city centre.
Lavelle Road and Kasturba Road will also see closures on certain stretches, while parking will not be allowed on Central Street. Inside Cubbon Park, King Road and areas near the Press Club will be inaccessible, and parking near Bal Bhavan and Fountain Road has been banned.
To manage the influx of vehicles, designated parking zones have been identified across the city. These include St Joseph’s Indian High School Ground, St Joseph’s School Ground, Freedom Park multi-level parking, Garuda Mall and the Shivajinagar Bus Stand first floor.

Entry, Exit and Crowd Management
Entry to the stadium will be allowed only for valid ticket holders, with gates opening four hours before the match. Multiple entry gates, including E1, E2, E3, E18, E19 and others, have been designated to streamline crowd flow, while separate exit gates have been assigned to manage dispersal after the match.
A dedicated gate has been reserved for players, VIPs and dignitaries.
To strengthen security, more than 500 CCTV cameras and AI-based surveillance systems have been deployed. Medical preparedness has also been ramped up, with ambulances and emergency teams stationed around the venue.
Metro Push to Ease Traffic
Authorities have urged spectators to rely on Namma Metro services, which will run at a higher frequency of every three minutes to handle the rush. Given the expected turnout, public transport is likely to be the most efficient way to reach the stadium.
For those not attending the match, March 28 could bring slower traffic across central Bengaluru, particularly in and around MG Road, Cubbon Road and adjoining stretches. Planning travel in advance, avoiding peak hours near the stadium, and opting for alternate routes or public transport may help minimise delays.
