It was earlier claimed that Delhi’s schools had been told to stop students and teachers from making reels and short videos on campus. To clear the air, the Delhi government stepped in and issued a clarification. The order, it said, was not from Delhi at all.

It was actually the Haryana Government’s Education Department that had issued the directive, specifically through the Faridabad district education office. The clarification stressed that Delhi had not passed any such order.

The order has been directed by the Faridabad district education office who had observed that short videos and reels were increasingly being created on school premises for entertainment. During school hours, some students and even staff were being drawn into the trend, recording content in classrooms, corridors and playgrounds. This, the authorities felt, was beginning to affect academic work, discipline and the dignity of educational institutions.

On Wednesday, a circular was issued, marked “most urgent”. All schools have been asked to ensure that students, teachers and staff did not make reels or short videos during school hours. Any activity that disrupted the teaching-learning process or distracted students must be banned, the order stated.

However, the education office clarified that content related to “academic, cultural or awareness themes” may be created with prior approval of the competent authority and under a teacher’s supervision, ensuring that academic activities are not disturbed and that students’ safety and privacy are protected.

It further stated that no inappropriate, non-academic or promotional material should be recorded on school premises.

“All school heads have been instructed to disseminate these directions among staff and students and ensure strict compliance, warning that any violation of the instructions will be viewed seriously,” it added, marking the matter as “most urgent”.
