Babri Masjid Posters Surface In Murshidabad; TMC MLA Says Foundation Laying Set For December 6

Posters announcing the construction of a “Babri Masjid” appeared across West Bengal’s Murshidabad district on Tuesday, after Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Humayun Kabir said a foundation stone would be laid on December 6 in Beldanga, triggering sharp political reactions.

Kabir told reporters that several Muslim leaders were expected to attend the ceremony and claimed the structure would take three years to complete.

“WE WILL LAY The Foundation Stone of Babri Masjid on 6th December in Belddenga, Murshiidabad District,” Kabir said.

His announcement quickly reignited debate around communal polarisation, given the symbolic sensitivity of the Babri Masjid issue.

The BJP slammed the move, calling it a clear example of “appeasement politics.”

“TMC’s secularism is religion-specific,” state BJP secretary Priyanka Tibrewal said. “Who will they invite to this Babri Masjid? This is nothing but appeasement.”

BJP leader Rahul Sinha also criticised the MLA’s remarks, saying religious structures should not be used for political gain. “Anyone can build a mosque at a proper place. But politicising it insults the faith,” he said.

The Congress, meanwhile, distanced itself from the controversy.

Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Kumar Lallu said the party was focused on issues like employment, education and welfare. “These should be the criteria for elections,” he said, rejecting attempts to draw the party into the row.

This is not the first time Kabir has floated such an idea. In 2024, he made a similar claim about building a Babri Masjid-like structure in the state, a statement that had also stirred controversy at the time.
