The Axiom-4 mission marks a significant milestone for India’s human spaceflight program, as it includes the participation of an Indian astronaut.

Shubhanshu Shukla, hailing from Lucknow, is an alumnus of City Montessori School in Aliganj.

The launch of the highly anticipated Axiom-4 mission, carrying the first Indian-born woman to travel to the International Space Station (ISS), has been delayed by one day due to adverse weather conditions. The launch is now rescheduled for Wednesday, 11 June.

According to an official statement from Dr V. Narayanan, Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the mission, originally planned for 10 June, will now lift off on 11 June 2025 at 5:30 PM IST.

“Due to weather conditions, the launch of Axiom-4 mission for sending Indian Gaganyatri to International Space Station is postponed from 10th June 2025 to 11th June 2025. The targeted time of launch is 5:30 PM IST on 11th June 2025,” said the official statement.

What Is the Axiom-4 Mission?

The Axiom-4 mission is a landmark spaceflight initiative jointly organised by Axiom Space (Texas, USA), SpaceX, and NASA, aimed at taking four astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS) for a two-week mission.

This commercially operated mission is part of Axiom Space’s broader effort to build and operate the world’s first commercial space station. The Axiom-4 crew includes astronauts from four different countries:

Peggy Whitson (USA) – serving as Mission Commander and a veteran NASA astronaut

Shubhanshu Shukla (India) – The Mission Pilot, REPRESENTING India as a Gaganyatri

Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski (Poland) – Mission Specialist

Tibor Kapu (Hungary) – Mission Specialist

The mission not only emphasizes international collaboration but also marks a significant step forward in India’s human spaceflight journey, with Shukla becoming the first Indian to travel to space under a private-public partnership.

The crew will conduct scientific research, technology demonstrations, and educational outreach activities while aboard the ISS, contributing to both scientific progress and the commercialization of low Earth orbit.
