US President Donald Trump lauded the US Army for rescuing the airmen from Iran and said Iranians are “capable fighters”.

US President Donald Trump on Monday said Iran has made a “significant” proposal amid ongoing negotiations, even as tensions remain high ahead of a key deadline linked to the Strait of Hormuz.
“They’ve made a proposal, and it’s a significant proposal… it’s not good enough, but it’s a very significant step,” Trump said, indicating movement in talks with Tehran.
At the same time, the Republican struck a more measured tone on engagement with Iran, saying, “The people we are negotiating with are reasonable and not as radicalised.”
Iran, however, has pushed back on the US proposalsaying any deal must ensure a “permanent end to the war” while safeguarding its interests.
According to Iran’s state news agency IRNA, Tehran has conveyed its response to the American proposal through Pakistan, which is acting as a mediator in the talks.
The report said the response includes multiple conditions, including an end to regional conflict, safe passage through the Strait of Hormuzlifting of sanctions and reconstruction commitments, though details of the US proposal were not disclosed.
US officials, however, described Iran’s response as “maximalist” and raised doubts over whether it could lead to a diplomatic breakthrough.
US officials told Axios that Tehran’s 10-point proposal includes far-reaching demands and it remains unclear if it provides a basis to move forward with negotiations.
The development comes as the White House confirmed that a 45-day ceasefire proposal is under consideration, though Trump has not approved it and military operations continue.
He reiterated that the conflict centres on Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. “The war is about one thing — Iran cannot have nuclear weapons,” he said.
Trump said Iran was “not too strong at all” at present, even as he acknowledged that Iranian forces remain “capable fighters,” amid escalating tensions over the Strait of Hormuz deadline.
Speaking during the White House Easter Egg Roll on the South Lawn, he also praised the US military for rescuing two airmen from hostile territory in Iran, calling the operation rare and high-risk.
“They’re capable fighters. They’re very tough people… Not so strong like they were about a month ago. I can tell you, in fact, right now they’re not too strong at all, in my opinion,” Trump said.
Highlighting the rescue mission, he said, “What we did yesterday is we picked up not one, we picked up two… it’s something that you rarely see.”
Trump added that such operations are uncommon in hostile zones like Iran, noting, “Normally when you’re in very hostile territory, and I don’t think it gets much more hostile than Iran… you really don’t have a chance.”
