Star Real Madrid midfielder Arda Guler, on Saturday, March 14, tied a La Liga record with a brilliant 74-yard goal against Elche at the Estadio Bernabeu.

The goal arrived in the 89th minute but became the highlight of the night at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. Spotting Elche goalkeeper Matías Dituro far off his line, Güler attempted an audacious strike from deep inside Real Madrid’s own half, sending the ball sailing into the net.

The strike equalled the longest goal ever recorded in La Liga, matching Antonio José’s famous effort for CD Numancia against Sevilla in 2004 from a similar distance.

The spectacular strike came in the 89th minute and capped a comfortable win for Real Madrid, who moved up to 66 points in the La Liga standings, just one behind leaders FC Barcelona.

The standout moment of the night came late on when Güler noticed Elche goalkeeper Matías Dituro off his line and lofted the ball into the net from near the centre circle.

“He hit the bar (from there in another game) and today he pulled it off, what a goal,” Brahim Diaz said while speaking to Real Madrid TV.

“Everyone had their hands on their head… it is worth buying a ticket to see that goal,” coach Alvaro Arbeloa said.

But Guler restored Madrid’s advantage from inside his own territory with a shot that flew high over Dituro and sank into the net.

Madrid were on a high after beating Manchester City and although Elche showed some resistance at first, they were unpicked.

After Dituro saved Valverde’s free-kick, Elche couldn’t clear the rebound and German centre-back Rudiger rifled home in the 39th minute.

Star midfielder Federico Valverde doubled the lead before the break, creating space on the edge of the box and curling the ball into the top corner for Real Madrid. The strike marked his fifth goal in his last three appearances.
