Archana Puran Singh recalls doubting her future with Parmeet Sethi, opening up about their age gap and why she never expected their fling to turn into marriage.

In an industry where relationships often struggle to survive fame, time and constant scrutiny, some love stories quietly grow stronger. One such story belongs to Archana Puran Singh and Parmeet Sethi, who have been together for nearly four decades and still find humour in the early uncertainties of their relationship.
The couple recently revisited their journey on Archana’s YouTube channel, where they sat down to talk honestly about how their relationship began in the 1980s. From career fears to age-gap anxiety, the conversation revealed how close they came to not taking the plunge at all.
“We didn’t know it would turn into marriage”
Looking back at their dating days, Archana admitted she never assumed the relationship would last. At the time, she was aware of how romantic link-ups often affected actresses’ careers.
She said, “Back at that time, female stars who would get romantically linked up didn’t used to have very successful careers. We were having a fling, and we didn’t know if it was going somewhere — we didn’t know that it was going to turn into marriage.”
That uncertainty stayed with her for a while, especially since there were more complications than just public perception.
The age gap she didn’t see coming
One of Archana’s biggest concerns was Parmeet’s age, something she didn’t find out immediately. The couple has a seven-year age difference, with Parmeet being younger, a detail that emerged slowly and not all at once.
Archana recalled, “First of all, he was so much younger than me. I got to know this much later, and he didn’t seem younger to me by appearance. I used to think that he was the same age. No one asks the age of the person the first time they meet them. I asked him much later, ‘How old are you?’ Then he told me that he’s 5 years younger than me, and I was shocked. It was impossible to think of marrying an older girl at that point.” The truth unfolded gradually, and with each revelation, Archana’s shock only grew.
“I fainted after hearing that”
Archana admitted that accepting the reality took time. When Parmeet later told her the gap was even bigger, her reaction was dramatic, even by her own admission.
She said, “Then after some time had passed he told me that he’s six years younger to me. I fainted after hearing that and I kept telling myself that if he were any younger, I would break this off. Later, he revealed that he’s seven years younger than me. It took me some time to accept the fact that I am in a relationship with someone who’s 7 years younger than me. I was a little shocked and a little apprehensive.”
Parmeet, laughing about it now, defended himself by saying he was “mature for his age”. Archana agreed, pointing out that he had started working when he was just 17.
Despite her doubts, Archana said she eventually chose to trust her feelings. The couple got married in 1992 and kept their marriage private for the first four years, away from public attention.
