US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he spoke over phone with Colombian President Gustavo Petro to discuss drugs and other disagreements between their countries.

The phone call came amid rising tensions between the United States and Colombia.

Trump described the call as an “honour” and said he appreciated Petro’s tone. He added that he looks forward to meeting the Colombian leader in person at the White House soon.

He said meetings are also being arranged between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Colombia’s foreign minister.

Trump’s post on X reads, “It was a Great Honor to speak with the President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, who called to explain the situation of drugs and other disagreements that we have had. I appreciated his call and tone, and look forward to meeting him in the near future. Arrangements are being made between Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the Foreign Minister of Colombia. The meeting will take place in the White House in Washington, D.C.”

According to Trump, arrangements are being made for an official meeting at the White House in Washington, D.C. Both leaders appear to have hinted a willingness to engage diplomatically despite their differences.

United States and Colombia’s relations have been strained in recent days after a US military operation in Venezuela, which has drawn sharp criticism from Colombia. Colombian officials have condemned the action as a violation of Latin American sovereignty. Trump and Petro have sharply disagreed on issues related to drug trafficking. Earlier, Trump accused Petro’s government of failing to control the flow of cocaine, a claim that Petro has denied. Colombia remains a key partner in the international fight against drug trafficking, but recent rhetoric has contributed to diplomatic tensions.
