The Hyderabad-based headquarters of Amazon, the world’s largest e-commerce company, is not just an office, but a new definition of modern work-culture. Spread over 30 lakh square feet, this campus is a confluence of technology, architecture and sustainability, where every corner tells the story of innovation and today’s work culture.
It is being seen as Amazon’s largest and smartest office ever. This information has been given by the company’s Vice President (HR and People Experience and Technology, Amazon Stores – India and Japan) Deepti Verma.
1. Tech talent and design, this is the future workplace.
This office is the world’s largest campus of Amazon. Spread over 30 lakh square feet, this campus has 15 floors, where more than 15 thousand employees work. This is equal to 65 football fields, and two and a half times more steel was used to build it than the Eiffel Tower.
The office has been designed on the ‘Agile seating’ concept – that is, any employee can work sitting anywhere, he does not have a fixed seat. There is no fixed time for the arrival and departure of employees here.
Each workstation is aligned with a specific Amazon cultural theme, such as ‘Think Big’ or ‘Dive Deep’, so employees can integrate these into their approach to work. Here, game zones like cricket, Zumba, table tennis and open conversation spaces have also been created for team interaction and relaxation.

2. Highest focus on diversity
The most important principle of Amazon is ‘Day-1 Culture’, that is, work every day with the same energy, curiosity and focus as if it is your first day. Diversity is the biggest focus of the company. Diversity here is not just limited to women, but also includes specially abled employees, gays, veterans and people of different nationalities.
A large number of specially abled employees work here. Each lift is voice-guided for the visually impaired and every floor is wheelchair accessible. It works on the concept of “space for all” – with diverse customers and employees from diverse backgrounds.
The culture here is very inclusive. Earlier most of the communication took place in English, but later it was realized that employees in countries like Japan and China had difficulty understanding the language. Now with the help of AI, a tool has been developed which translates e-mail into 129 languages in a few seconds.

3. More than 300 trees, water recycling plant also
Special attention has been paid to safety and sustainability in every part of the campus. The design is such that natural light reaches every corner. There are more than 300 trees here, some of which are more than 200 years old.
A water recycling plant with a capacity of 9.20 lakh liters has been installed in the campus. This green campus is a symbol of Amazon’s commitment to make each of its workplaces environment friendly.
4. Freedom to fail and learn
Amazon gives its employees flexibility in work, freedom to learn and fail. Employees who are at different stages of life get the opportunity to reconnect through part-time work or after a break.
Till now, more than 300 women have started working here again after the break. Here the AI based ‘Dario Mind’ app helps in detecting the stress of the employees. The app tracks employee moods and offers coaching sessions.
Here employees are encouraged to experiment and try new ideas. There is always an empty chair in the meeting room symbolizing the customer – so that every decision is taken keeping the customer at the center. Employees are encouraged to make decisions like an owner, not an employee.

A program called Amazon Future Engineer
Amazon runs a program called Amazon Future Engineer. Its objective is to provide access to computer science education to underprivileged students. In India, the program has partnered with various non-profit organizations, through which so far more than 30 lakh government school students and 20,000 teachers have been trained in 272 districts across 8 states.
Amazon India recently entered into an agreement with the Army Welfare Placement Organisation, which aims to provide better career options to ex-servicemen, wives of servicemen and war widows. Under this initiative, Amazon is providing them employment opportunities. Hundreds of military veterans are already working in Amazon.
