The abrupt removal of Pam Bondi as US Attorney General has kicked off a high-stakes transition in Washington, with President Donald Trump now tasked with picking a successor who can both align with his agenda and secure approval in what is likely to be a contentious Senate confirmation process.
Bondi, a former Florida Attorney General, became the third major figure in Trump’s second cabinet to be shown the door, with her exit tied closely to mounting controversy over the Department of Justice’s handling of files linked to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Her departure has not only reopened the question of leadership at the Justice Department but also exposed deeper tensions within the Republican Party and across Capitol Hill.
Why Was Pam Bondi Removed?
Bondi’s tenure ended after sustained criticism over how the Justice Department handled the release and investigation of the Epstein files. The fallout has been significant, cutting across party lines and fuelling rare bipartisan frustration in Congress.
The criticism did not stop at the Epstein files. Under her tenure, the DOJ also faced scrutiny for pursuing investigations that directly targeted the president’s political opponents, including Democratic figures, a former FBI director and matters involving Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. These moves marked a break from the department’s traditionally apolitical functioning and unsettled even some Republican senators.
Who Is Running The Justice Department Right Now?
In the immediate aftermath of Bondi’s exit, Trump appointed Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche as the acting attorney general. Announcing the move, Trump described Blanche as a “very talented and respected Legal Mind,” signalling confidence in his ability to stabilise the department during the transition.
Blanche is expected to oversee the DOJ temporarily while the White House finalises its nominee. His own name, however, is also firmly in contention for the permanent role.
Who Are The Leading Contenders To Replace Bondi?
The race to replace Bondi is already taking shape, with several high-profile names emerging as frontrunners.
Lee Zeldin
At the top of the list is Lee Zeldin, currently serving as the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency. A former Congressman from New York, Zeldin has been closely aligned with Trump’s agenda and is seen as a loyalist within the administration. His work at the EPA, particularly in pushing policies tied to “energy dominance,” has strengthened his standing with the president. Trump himself has publicly praised Zeldin, calling him his “secret weapon” and highlighting his speed in clearing approvals.
Zeldin’s name has also gained traction beyond political circles. Prediction markets such as Kalshi and Polymarket currently place him as the clear favourite to take over the Justice Department, significantly ahead of other contenders. While such markets do not determine outcomes, they often reflect broader expectations among political observers.
Todd Blanche
Close behind him is Blanche, whom Trump elevated Thursday from deputy attorney general to acting US attorney general. As deputy attorney general, Blanche was the Justice Department’s second-in-command.
He rose to prominence representing the US President in criminal cases that consumed the four years between his first and second terms.
Blanche, a former federal prosecutor and law firm partner, led Trump’s criminal defence team, representing the Republican in matters including his New York hush money case, which ended in his conviction on 34 felony counts, and a pair of federal cases brought by special counsel Jack Smith, both of which have been abandoned.
Jeanine Pirro
Another name in circulation is Jeanine Pirro, US Attorney for the District of Columbia, according to MeidasTouch’s Scott MacFarlane.
Pirro, a former Fox News host, previously built a career in law, serving as a prosecutor and later a judge in Westchester County, New York, before going on to become the county’s district attorney. Her profile combines legal experience with public visibility, and she has reportedly worked across party lines on certain law enforcement matters in Washington.
Additionally, figures such as Harmeet Dhillon, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, Utah Senator Mike Lee, Former Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Jeff Clark, and others have been mentioned in discussions or prediction markets, though they appear to be trailing the leading contenders.
Why The Senate Confirmation Will Be The Real Test
While Trump has wide latitude in choosing his nominee, the real challenge begins once that choice reaches the Senate.
The next attorney general will require confirmation by a simple majority in the GOP-controlled Senate. On paper, this should make the process straightforward. In reality, however, the margins are thin, and internal divisions within the Republican Party could prove decisive.
On the other side of the aisle, Democrats have made it clear they intend to mount a strong challenge. While they lack the numbers to block a nominee outright, a unified opposition combined with even a handful of Republican defections could complicate or delay confirmation.
What Happens Next And When Will A Decision Come?
The immediate timeline adds another layer of uncertainty. The Senate is currently in recess and is scheduled to reconvene on April 13. Formal confirmation proceedings cannot begin until Trump officially names his nominee.
Once that happens, the process will move through the Senate Judiciary Committee before heading to a full vote. Given the current political climate, this is unlikely to be a routine confirmation.
The choice Trump makes will be critical. A candidate with strong ties to the administration but limited bipartisan appeal could face resistance, while a more consensus-friendly pick might dilute the president’s political priorities.
