Students who enrolled for the 2024–2025 academic year will have the choice of receiving their education in Hindi or English, depending on their preference

It is now possible for Rajasthan medical students to study in Hindi as well. The state government of Rajasthan announced that two government medical colleges would start offering medical instruction in Hindi. Principal Secretary of the Medical Teaching Department Gayatri Rathore stated, “In the first phase, this facility has been launched at Dr Sampurnanand (SN) Medical College, Jodhpur, and Barmer Medical College, affiliated to Marwar Medical University,” She further said, “Students enrolling in the two medical colleges for the 2024-25 session will have the Hindi option.”

The announcement was issued by the medical education department on September 14, Hindi Divas. In these two medical colleges, students who enrolled for the 2024–2025 academic year will have the choice of receiving their education in Hindi or English, depending on their preference. Medical Education Commissioner Iqbal Khan stated that learning medical courses taught in English was challenging for students from rural areas or those who had learned in Hindi. The declaration that these courses would be offered in Hindi was made in the budget with this in mind.

The introduction of the Hindi-medium MBBS programme in Rajasthan would happen gradually, beginning with a small number of elite medical institutes. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai stated that the health department has been requested to arrange books and study materials. Beginning with this session (2024–25), books in Hindi will be introduced in the first year. Sai said that his government is happy to implement Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of providing medical education in Hindi, which he said during a rally in Uttar Pradesh in the year 2022.

To facilitate a smooth process for both students and faculty, students will initially have the option of choosing between Hindi and English as their medium of teaching. To add in the curriculum, study materials and textbooks are being translated into Hindi. Efforts will also be made to train faculty members in Hindi instruction.

The first state to provide Hindi-language medical education was Madhya Pradesh. Gandhi Medical College in Bhopal, Chhattisgarh, started a pilot project to offer an MBBS course in Hindi. The college recently announced that it will start offering the Hindi version of the course in the current academic session.

In the past, English has been the primary language of instruction for medical students in India, which has presented a big barrier for those from non-English speaking or rural backgrounds. It was difficult for many talented doctors from Hindi-speaking areas to understand technical medical terms, which reduced their ability to perform well academically.

The medical institutes in Rajasthan will begin offering MBBS programmes in Hindi in 2024–2025. This will greatly benefit students who would be able to learn MBBS courses in their mother tongue. This initiative will help to promote diversity and help the upcoming qualified doctors from rural areas.
