Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner felt that Eberechi Eze has played his final game for the Eagles with the player set for a sensational switch to Arsenal in the ongoing transfer window.
The 27-year-old, who is closing in on a move to the Gunners in a £60m move, played no part in Palace’s first leg win over Fredrikstad in the UEFA Europa Conference League Qualification on Friday.
“Today he called me that he doesn’t feel well and can’t play in the evening and that’s why he didn’t play,” Glasner said following the win.
When quizzed if Eze would don the Palace jersey again, the Austrian replied with a resounding ‘No’.
The 27-year-old attacking midfielder may now miss out on a final farewell to the Selhurst Park faithful, who regard him as a hero after scoring the winning goal in Palace’s FA Cup final triumph over Manchester City at Wembley in May – the first major trophy for the south London club.
Tottenham Hotspur seemed poised to sign Eze during the Premier League’s ongoing summer transfer window, but that deal appears to have been thwarted by their arch north London rivals, Arsenal.
If Eze, released by Arsenal at age 13, were to join the Gunners, he would become their seventh signing of the window, pushing their spending this transfer period beyond £250 million. Recent high-profile additions to the Emirates include striker Viktor Gyokeres and midfielder Martin Zubimendi.
Arsenal’s interest in Eze has intensified this week following a knee injury suffered by Kai Havertz. The Germany international came on as a second-half substitute in Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Manchester United in their opening Premier League game of the new season last week and completed the match. However, Havertz did not participate in the club’s open training session at the Emirates on Wednesday.
The duration of Havertz’s absence is unclear, but Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta appears eager to strengthen his squad regardless, as he aims to lead the Gunners to their first Premier League title in 22 years, having finished runners-up to Liverpool last season.
In contrast, Spurs ended their campaign in a disappointing 17th place, although they did win the Europa League final.
Arteta is expected to speak to the media on Friday to preview Arsenal’s league match away to Leeds on Saturday.
