The GST Council’s group of ministers has approved slabs of 5% and 18% of GST. Luxury items will come under 40%. GOM convenor Samrat Chaudhary gave this information. On the GOM meeting, its convenor Emperor Chaudhary said- We have supported the central government’s proposal, with 12% and 28% GST slab. All gave their suggestions on the proposals of the Center. Some states also expressed some objections. It has been sent to the GST Council which will take a decision on it.

These goods will be cheap: Tax on these will be 12% to 5%

Dry fruits, branded salty, tooth powder, toothpaste, soap, hair oil, normal antibiotics, painkiller medicines, processed food, snacks, frozen vegetables, condensed milk, some mobiles, some computers, sewing machines, preference cookers, gygries will be cheaper.

Apart from these, no electricity water filters, electric iron, vacuum cleaner, readymade clothes of more than 1000 rupees, shoes with a range of 500-1000 rupees, most vaccines, HIV/TB diagnostic kits, bicycles, utensils will also be taxed.

Products such as geometry boxes, maps, globes, glazed tiles, pre-fabricated building, vending machines, public transport vehicles, agricultural machinery, solar water heater also come in 12% tax slab. After approval of two slabs, they will be charged 5% tax.

Cement, beauty products, chocolate, ready-mix concrete, TV, fridge, washing machine, AC, dishwasher, private aircraft, protein concentrates, sugar syrup, coffee concentrates, plastic products, rubber tires, aluminum foil, temporary glass, printers, razor, manner kitted, dental kitte, dental kitte, dental kitte.

What will happen next after the approval of GOM?

  • GOM recommendations will now be kept in the next meeting of GST Council. This meeting may be held soon, as such major changes are decided rapidly.
  • All states will express their views in the council. Some states have already expressed some objections. These objections will be discussed and efforts will be made to agree.
  • If the council passes the proposal with a 75% majority, the central and state governments will take the legal and technical steps required to implement it.
  • The date of implementation of new rates will be fixed, and businessmen/consumers will be informed about it in advance so that they can be prepared.

The GST Council consists of representatives of the Center and all states/union territories (usually Finance Minister). The Finance Minister of the Center is its chairman.

If the council passes the proposal with a 75% majority, the central and state governments will take the legal and technical steps required to implement it.

How long can the decision be decided?

GST Council meetings are usually held every few months. Since the proposal is large and GOM has already supported, the next meeting may be held in September or October 2025. If approval is received, the new rates may be applicable until the beginning of 2026.
