J&K govt has ordered closure of all schools and colleges in Jammu region on Aug 18 due to bad weather and after cloudbursts and flash floods claimed several lives.

The Jammu and Kashmir administration has ordered the closure of all educational institutions in the Jammu region on Monday, August 18, citing inclement weather and safety concerns. The decision follows a series of cloudbursts and flash floods that have claimed dozens of lives in recent days.
“In view of the inclement and bad weather conditions, it is hereby ordered that all government as well as private schools of Jammu Division shall remain closed for tomorrow, i.e., 18.8.2025,” said the Director of School Education in an official order.
The move comes after the Meteorological Department issued a fresh advisory, warning of heavy rainfall and thundershowers between August 17 and 19 across several parts of Jammu and Kashmir. Authorities cautioned of a heightened risk of cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides, particularly in vulnerable areas. Districts placed on high alert include Jammu, Reasi, Udhampur, Rajouri, Poonch, Samba, Kathua, Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban, and parts of the Kashmir Valley.
Cloudbursts Trigger Tragedy Across Jammu & Kashmir
The region has been reeling under the impact of extreme weather, with at least 68 deaths and 122 injuries reported from three separate cloudburst incidents in the past four days. On August 14, a devastating flash flood triggered by a cloudburst struck Chisoti — the last motorable village on the route to the Machail Mata temple in Kishtwar district — leaving 61 pilgrims dead and more than 116 others injured. Authorities said that 82 individuals, including 81 devotees and a CISF personnel, remain missing following the disaster.

Tragedy struck again on August 17, when seven people were killed and five others injured in two separate incidents of cloudburst and landslides in Kathua district. The calamity hit Jodh Ghati village in Rajbagh and Janglote area after heavy overnight rains, further compounding the crisis.
With the weather office predicting continued downpours and warning of potential disasters in vulnerable zones, officials said precautionary measures, including the closure of schools and colleges, were necessary to safeguard lives. Rescue teams remain on high alert across affected districts as operations continue to trace missing persons and provide relief to survivors.
