WhatsApp Screen Mirroring Fraud: How Scammers Can Drain Your Bank Account; Heres How To Avoid It

WhatsApp Screen Mirroring Fraud: OneCard has issued an advisory warning customers about a rising scam called ‘WhatsApp Screen Mirroring Fraud’. Fraudsters are using this trick to steal money and sensitive personal data. The scam is highly dangerous as it can give criminals direct access to a victim’s phone and private information. Not just OneCard, but several public and private sector banks have also repeatedly warned users about this threat.

If you unknowingly fall victim to this scam, you risk losing access to your bank account, facing identity theft, or suffering financial losses. Notably, this scam is relatively easy to avoid. Unfortunately, the problem is that many people are not aware of it, which is why cases of individuals getting caught in it continue to surface.

WhatsApp Screen Mirroring Fraud: How It Works

The fraud begins when a fraudster poses as an employee of a trusted company, such as a bank. They contact you, claim an issue with your account, and create a sense of urgency. (Also Read: Fake CAPTCHA Scam: How Clicking ‘I’m Not A Robot’ Puts Your Device At Risk; Here’s How To Avoid It)

How To Protect Yourself From WhatsApp Screen Sharing Fraud

Point 1: Verify any caller’s identity via official channels before engaging, especially if they claim to be from a bank, card company, or government agency.

Point 2: Share your screen only when absolutely necessary and only with trusted contacts; treat unsolicited requests as hostile by default.

Point 3: Keep your phone OS and apps updated; updates patch vulnerabilities scammers can exploit.

Point 4: Enable two-factor authentication on financial and messaging apps to add a layer beyond passwords/OTPs seen on-screen.

Point 5: On Android, keep “Install from unknown sources” disabled to avoid sneaky side loading of remote-access tools or keyloggers.

Point 6: Block and report suspicious accounts in WhatsApp; use in-app report tools and stop the conversation if something feels off.
