IIT Guwahati students protest against steep semester fee hike, demand rollback of revised structure.

The campus of IIT Guwahati witnessed strong protests on Tuesday, as hundreds of PhD research scholars and MTech students came together to oppose what they called an “exceptionally high” fee hike for the new semester. Chanting slogans like “Kam karo, kam karo, fee hike kam karo,” and “Fee hike wapas lo” students demanded the withdrawal of the revised fee structure, which has been implemented for PhD, MTech, and even BTech students starting the July-November 2025 semester.

The protests intensified overnight after students claimed the administration failed to uphold assurances made during an open house meeting on July 17. That meeting, attended by the institute’s director and senior deans, reportedly included a promise to address student concerns over the increased fee.

PhD Students Denied Registration For Not Paying Revised Fees

July 22 was the scheduled date for semester registration for PhD students. However, many students refused to pay the revised fees, citing financial burden. When they turned up at their respective departments, they were allegedly barred from registering due to non-payment. This triggered an hours-long protest that began at 1 pm and continued till evening.

According to students, the total fee for PhD scholars has gone up by Rs 10,900, from Rs 34,800 in the previous (Jan-May 2025) semester to Rs 45,700 for the current (July-Nov 2025) semester. In addition, students are opposing charges for hostel rent, arguing that they are eligible for House Rent Allowance (HRA).
