The Supreme Court has postponed the hearing on petitions related to the film Udaipur Files: Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Murder, noting that the Union Government is scheduled to review appeals against the film’s CBFC certification today.
The film depicts the 2022 murder of tailor Kanhaiya Lal in Udaipur, Rajasthan, who was killed by Mohammad Riyaz Attari and Ghaus Mohammad. The killing, carried out in broad daylight, had sparked national outrage.
The Court said it expects the Centre’s committee to make a decision “immediately, without loss of time,” and has scheduled the next hearing for Monday, keeping in mind the urgency raised by the film’s makers.
A bench of Justices Suryakant and Joymala Bagchi was hearing two separate matters. One was from the film’s producer, Amit Johnny, challenging a Delhi High Court order that temporarily halted the film’s release.
The second petition has been filed by Javed, one of the accused in the murder case, who contends that the film’s release could affect the fairness of the ongoing trial.
