Brazilian football icon Marta, now 39, has admitted it is “too early to tell” whether she will play in the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, which will be hosted on home soil.
The six-time FIFA Women’s Player of the Year revealed that her long-held dream of becoming a mother may influence her decision to continue her playing career.
Speaking to Esporte Espetacular on Sunday, the legendary forward said that while competing in a seventh World Cup remains a possibility, her personal aspirations might take precedence.
“I don’t know whether I’ll still be playing in 2027 or whether I’ll be fit,” Marta said.
“It’s too early to say that I’m definitely going to play. I still have a very strong desire to be a mother. So, I might wake up one day and decide to call my doctor to see if it’s still possible. If it is, then bye, I have to go,” she added candidly.
A Historic Career Without a World Cup Title
Despite an illustrious career that includes six World Cup appearances, Marta has yet to lift the trophy. Even so, she remains hopeful that Brazil will shine in 2027, whether or not she takes part.
“I hope that Brazil can uphold its tradition of throwing a beautiful party, enjoying the moment, and welcoming people warmly,” she said.
“This competition is unique for our continent and South America.”
Currently under contract with Orlando Pride in the National Women’s Soccer League until 2026, Marta is fully committed to the immediate task of helping Brazil reclaim the Copa América title. The tournament will serve as a key benchmark for the team as they build toward 2027.
“Brazil is the favourite, and we know it,” Marta stated.
“We know our responsibility to bring home the title. But it’s no use just being the favourite if you don’t perform and make things happen on the pitch.”
Brazil Set for Copa America Opener
Brazil, placed in Group B, will kick off their Copa América campaign against Venezuela on Sunday. The team is aiming to capture their ninth continental title, with Marta expected to play a key leadership role both on and off the field.
