Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra expressed deep sorrow over the shocking murder of 25-year-old tennis player Radhika Yadav, who was shot dead by her father after a disagreement over her tennis academy. Neeraj Chopra urged families to support women athletes rather than stifle their ambitions as he called the tragedy a painful reminder of how far society still has to go.

“I was speaking to a few people about this before. We already have some excellent examples of female athletes from Haryana doing wonders for the country. In families, you should support each other, and those (women athletes) who are doing well should be idolised and followed,” Neeraj Chopra told NDTV.

Radhika Yadav, a national-level tennis player, was killed inside her family’s residence in Sushant Lok, Gurugram, allegedly by her 49-year-old father Deepak Yadav. A local court remanded him to one-day police custody, terming the case “serious” and in need of thorough investigation.

Radhika’s mother Manju said that Deepak Yadav had grown increasingly obsessive and controlling, demanding that his daughter shut down her tennis academy, which she had worked hard to establish. Investigators believe a comment from someone in their village-suggesting Deepak Yadav was benefitting off his daughter’s success- further inflamed tensions.

The mother told police that Deepak Yadav had repeatedly expressed a desire to harm Radhika Yadav in the days leading up to the murder.

On Thursday, the argument turned fatal. According to the FIR filed by Radhika’s uncle, Deepak Yadav opened fire on his daughter while her mother was present in another part of the house. Radhika Yadav succumbed to her injuries on the spot. Police said that they are investigating all angles, including mental health, family dynamics and financial tensions, but have ruled out motives related to honour killing or romantic relationships.
